Apr 2010. Location. Meadville, PA. Posts. 496. I've been testing out a 360 grain gas checked boolit with RX 7 in all three of my 45-70's. A Marlin 1895G, an 1895 CB and an H&R Buffalo Classic. I started at 41.5 grs, shooting 5 round groups, and worked up to 49.5 grs. 1/2 grain increase at a time. I used 2 alloys.A caseful of FFFG black powder and a couple of Wonder Wads seated firmly on top creates a good, booming blank for Fourth of July or New Year's Eve. Just remember to clean your rifle and the case right away, to avoid corrosion from the salts in black powder. The .45-70 cartridge is a marvelous round. You're going to love it. ;D

755. I worked up 405 gr cast with Unique in my 45/70 handi rifle until the case head expanded and brass flowed into the extractor misfit. Quickload thinks that is 87,000 psi 1900 fps. I started the work up with 15 gr 25 kpsi 1300 fps. 5744 seems to be a real favorite for heavy (500 gr+) cast bullets. Lyman's 48th Edition Reloading Handbook has a significant number of loads for the .45-70, including loads with 500 gr lead bullets and Varget (nothing with 4895 - it may not be a good choice for the heavier bullets; I see they have some H4895 loads with 300 grain jacketed bullets).The best 45-70 deer loads are the ones that say .30-30 Winchester on the box. No fuggin way I'm huckin 300-500 grain slugs at deer now that I don't hunt in shotgun zones anymore. People are not using these to limit range. Some loads low 2000s, especially hornady's lever loads, not all that far from 30-30.The .45-70 also features a straight-walled design..30-06.
