I started at 41.5 grs, shooting 5 round groups, and worked up to 49.5 grs. 1/2 grain increase at a time. I used 2 alloys.A caseful of FFFG black powder and a couple of Wonder Wads seated firmly on top creates a good, booming blank for Fourth of July or New Year's Eve. Just remember to clean your rifle and the case right away, to avoid corrosion from the salts in black powder. The .45-70 cartridge is a marvelous round. You're going to love it. ;D

5744 seems to be a real favorite for heavy (500 gr+) cast bullets. Lyman's 48th Edition Reloading Handbook has a significant number of loads for the .45-70, including loads with 500 gr lead bullets and Varget (nothing with 4895 - it may not be a good choice for the heavier bullets; I see they have some H4895 loads with 300 grain jacketed bullets).The best 45-70 deer loads are the ones that say .30-30 Winchester on the box.
